Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) root is one of the most popular natural herbal rest & sleep aids and approved in the United Kingdom, Germans Commission E, Belgium, and France for the herbal treatment of insomnia, nervous tension and stress, restlessness, disturbed sleep patterns, and anxiety states.
Furthermore, scientific evidence indicates that valerian can offer many sleepless people a safer, non-addictive sleep aid that helps them stay asleep longer and providing a refreshing night sleep without the hangover. Clinical research shows that valerian improves overall quality of rest, relaxation, & sleep, shortening the length of time it takes to fall asleep and helping people sleep more soundly. Overall, the herb seems to help poor sleepers the most, having little effect in people who already have regular sleep. Several clinical studies also suggest that valerian may improve well-being by decreasing nervousness and anxiety. This is one of the best OTC natural rest aids & herbal sleep aid medicine.

Emotional Support Vital to Recovery in Peru
A Red Cross pychosocial support program helps children recover from the aftermath of the Peru Earthquake
By Jessica Fallas Hidalgo, Psychosocial Support Delegate, American Red Cross

I looked up to find the face of a concerned woman with a young boy by her side. The woman explained that since the earthquake struck six months ago, her son appeared nervous and afraid, was having problems in school and no longer wanted to talk.
I gently inched closer to make contact with him, but his frightened expression restrained my first attempt. “What is his name?” I asked his mother. She replied, “Juan” (name changed for confidentiality).
Taking a stuffed animal out of my bag, I return my attention to the little boy. “Hi Juan, I want to introduce you to my friend who came to play with the children of Perú.”
Still looking fearful, but with eyes filled with curiosity, Juan looked at the doll. Little by little, Juan allowed “Paco the Hippopotamus” to get closer to him, until with a slightly trembling hand, he took Paco and hugged him.
Red Cross Response to Earthquake in Peru
While earthquakes last only minutes, the emotional impact on individuals endures much longer. More than 655,000 people were affected by the August 15, 2007 earthquake that struck off the coast of Peru. Within days, the American Red Cross responded with life-saving emergency assistance.
Six months later, the American Red Cross continues to assist survivors by helping people get back on their feet and regain normalcy in their lives.
In total, the American Red Cross has designated nearly $2 million for immediate response and early recovery following the massive quake. Working in partnership with the Peruvian Red Cross, the American Red Cross is helping provide transitional shelter, psychosocial support and health and hygiene education to five target communities including Chincha, where Juan and his mother live.
The psychosocial support program is designed to engage people in community-based activities such as games, singing, dancing and arts and crafts. These activities help reestablish important community and social networks that are often stressed or broken during a disaster.
Emotional Support to Help Children Recover
While I stood with his mother, Juan stayed nearby playing with Paco. Suddenly, a voice spoke out. “My house fell down.”
In one moment, the boy who didn’t want to talk slowly continued to describe how his house trembled, how a wall tumbled towards him and how he had to run to protect himself.
“I ran to see if my mom and little brother were alive,” he explained.
Thanks to early recovery programs like psychosocial support as well as the generosity of donors and the efforts of the American Red Cross and the Peruvian Red Cross, Juan and his family will get the support they need to rebuild their lives.
As I turned to leave, Juan thanked me and asked, “Are you going to come back?”

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, February 13, 2008 — In response to the tornadoes and severe weather that caused significant damage to communities in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee, country music superstar and American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet volunteer, Sara Evans, is auctioning off memorabilia through MissionFish, the exclusive charity solution provider for eBay Giving Works. Items to be auctioned off include an autographed top and dress that Sarah wore in her video "As If." Both items come with a copy of the video and an autographed "Greatest Hits" CD which contains the hit "As If." All proceeds from the auction will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which helps the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the southern tornadoes. The online auction is available to the public now through Tuesday, February 19 at 5:30 pm/CST and can be accessed by going to www.saraevans.com.
Sara Evans
The tornadoes and severe weather system cut a swath of destruction that resulted in an estimated 59 deaths, and injured hundreds more. The Red Cross immediately mobilized volunteers and supplies and responded to the storm, providing shelter, feeding victims and emergency workers and lending emotional support to help survivors and emergency workers manage the fear and anxiety that disasters bring. Relief efforts are ongoing, with distribution of supplies, such as clean-up kits, into the affected areas. Red Cross case workers will work with survivors to provide additional emergency assistance based on the damage sustained to their homes.
Evans birthday was on February 5, the same day that the tornadoes stuck. In lieu of gifts, Evans' fans have been asked to donate to her favorite charities. In support of the Red Cross, fans across the country donated blood or recruited blood donors.
In response to the Middle Tennessee tornadoes, Evans also donated her time by recording public service advertisements to encourage donations via www.redcross.org. Additionally, she taped a specific message for tornado preparedness for future disasters. The advertisements will be available soon via www.redcross.org.

Tana Toraja famous of its beautiful seanery A short flight by Merpati Nusantara Airlines or a scenic and interesting eight-hour drive through Bugis villages, coastal fishing villages and the Toraja foothills brings visitors up to the verdant Toraja highlands or Tana Toraja where the almost flourescent green of the rice fields are dotted with distinctive saddle backed houses. Known as Tongkonan, these houses are said to echo the horns of the buffalo, that are an inseparable part of the Torajans.
Toraja people spend their lives growing excellent fragrant rice, raising magnificent buffalo, especially the highly valued pink albino strains. Their work is interspersed with dramatic ceremonies. Harvest festivals and house warming festivals, are times for feasting and a gathering of the clan, times to wear their best costumes and jewellery, bring out the tuak (a local brew) and party for days on end, times for singing and dancing and, of course, eating. These are also times for neighbours and clan members to pay their respects and to pay back obligations that may date back generations. Attractive tourist destination in Tana Toraja are:
Londa: 4 km from Rantepao the capital of Tana Toraja, where a balcony of tau tau guard the entrance to two impressive caves filled with brightly decorated coffins, while all around them skulls and bones lie on the rocks.
Lemo: At Lemo (12 km from Rantepao), the towering cliff face is filled with graves and tau tau of high-ranking aristocrats, best viewed very early in the morning before the sun gets too high.
Ke'te Kusu: The village of Ke'te Kesu (14 km from Rantepao) has become a living museum. Here a whole tongkonan, or village of traditional houses, and their distinctive rice barns, looks out over a sea of rice fields. At the back of the village are some beautiful tau tau and intricate old coffins.
Some of the country's best white water rapids are in the Toraja highlands, and the adventure company Sobek takes guests to the hills. There is a choice of easy one-day raft trips for fun, or the more adventurous three-day rafting/trekking trip through countryside scarcely touched by man. Experienced guides take guests rafting down the Sa'dang river on some of Sulawesi's best runs where grades four and five rapids guarantee excitement. It's high adventure and a chance to visit remote villages where a foreign face is a curiosity.
Mamasa: Meanwhile trekkers will find the three-day walk from Toraja to Mamasa (West Toraja) a journey back in time. While east Toraja has many tourists, Mamasa is still very much the way it always was a more rugged version of Toraja. Higher mountains, the air is appreciably cooler and walking is a pleasure. Trails lead through isolated villages far off the tourist route where traditional houses still use attap roofs and funerary tombs are carved in the shape of buffaloes. The clacking of handlooms can be heard echoing through the hills. Those who prefer to visit in comfort can contact a tour company and visit Mamasa by car or minibus.
Palopo: From Toraja, the road heads east through the mountains to the coastal town of Palopo, following the east coast before heading inland to the Bugis heartland of Sengkang with its silk weaving and Soppeng Wattampone, and back to Makassar via Maros

The esplanade of Jalan Penghibur from Hotel Makassar Golden up to the Mayor's of Makassar Residence along 2 km, offers atmosphere, sea views and food stalls during the evening. The cosmopolitan character of Makassar can be felt at Paotere Harbour, where traditional motor sailing boats or perahu are docked. Interesting buildings can be found within the massive waterfront fortress of Fort Rotterdam, built in 1545 by the rulers of the powerful Gowa kingdom, this impressively solid fort was later taken over by the Dutch and rebuilt in 1667. Within the solid walls is the dungeon where one of Indonesia's national heroes, Prince Diponegoro was imprisoned for 27 years until his death in 1855. To-day the fort serves as a museum and cultural offices.captured by the Dutch in the 17th century, including the Makassar Provincial Museum. Women can be seen weaving colourful silk at Pertenunan Sutera Alam.

Night - time transforms the palm-line waterfront into Sunset Strip, the longest dinning table in the world. As the sun sinks into Makassar Bay, stallholders appear wheeling their food carts, and soon the air is filled with appetising smells of barbequing sate, frying mee goreng or pisang epe and a host of other delicious dishes and drinks ready to be enjoyed. The stalls stay open way into the night as customers sit at tables or on the sea wall to enjoy the cool evening breezes while they eat.

Palopo: From Toraja, the road heads east through the mountains to the coastal town of Palopo, following the east coast before heading inland to the Bugis heartland of Sengkang with its silk weaving and Soppeng Wattampone, and back to Makassar via Maros

toraja tourWelcome to the Tana Toraja, the "Land of Heavenly Kings".
The long drive from the lowlands to the mountain stronghold of Tanaopens up a breath-taking new world. The rugged mountains and verdant valleys are home to a people whose love of religious spectacle is equaled only by their hospitality. With majestic panoramas, captivating villages and dramatic ceremonies, Tana Toraja is the undisputed highlight of any journey to Sulawesi.
Upgraded roads, an airport and several star-rated hotels have opened the Toraja highland to visitors of all interests. The essence of the Toraja beliefs and way of life can be experienced without undue effort, as many interesting sites are clustered around the town of Rantepao, easily accessible by road.
Toraja Land whose ancestor oriented group believes that their forefathers descended from heaven onto a mountain some twenty generations ago. Their colourful culture is especially rich in elaborate sacrificial, post mortuary, and cave burial sites.
Tana Toraja (Toraja Land), which lies in the north of the province is known for its unique culture and ancient traditions. The center of tourism is Rantepao, 328 km from Ujung Pandang by road. There are several small bungalow hotels at Rantepao, and Makale, the district capital. The entry to Tana Toraja is marked by a gate built in traditional boat-shaped architecture. The road passes through the mountains of Kandora and Gandang on which, according to Toraja mythology, the first ancestors of celestial beings descended from heaven. The majority of the people still follows an ancestral cult called "Aluk Todolo" which governs all traditional ceremonies. From Rantepao, side trips can be made to Kete, a traditional village where there are handicraft and unique shops. Behind the village there is a grave site on a hillside. Life-size statues guard over old coffins. As roads are not always paved, it is necessary to use a jeep or walk if the weather is good (between May and October).
Two cliff graves easy to reach are Lemo and Londa. Londa is one of the oldest hanging graves belonging to the nobility. A large balcony is filled with effigies of the dead. Kerosene lamps with young village guides, can be hired to enter the caves to see skeletons and old coffins. At Lemo, burial chambers are cut out of the rock and several balconies filled with effigies look out while new caves are being dug to serve as family graves.
There are several grave sites and traditional villages of which Palawa is a classic example of a village on a small hill with "Tongkonan" or a burial place with celebrations and festivals. Visitors are welcome but they are expected to adhere to local customs of dress, seating and bringing a token present.

#Come and See Tabut Festival
Bengkulu has a number of traditions which still continue in Bengkulu people life, one of the cultural assets influenced by Islam is the Tabot/Tabut (an Arabic word which means the coffin), and it is an interesting attraction to enrich your experiences particularly to observe one of Indonesian's unique tradition and culture.
Tabot or now is called Tabut festival, the highlight of the Bengkulu people cultural calendar is the colorful and interesting Islamic festival, staged nearby Fort Marborough - Bengkulu city. The festival highlights music, traditional and new creation dancing contest, Bengkulu song contest, bazaar, effigies, and many more in the Bengkulu square. At the end of the festival the effigies are carried through the streets with much merriment and traditional music, and are finally tossed to the grave of Sheik Burhanuddin.
Tabut festival is held annually from 1st to 10th of the month of Muharram (Islamic Calendar). Because the date is fixed by the Islamic lunar calendar, it moves forward 10 days each year. The next Tabut festival will be held from January 10th to 20th, 2008.
It takes place at Bengkulu square to honor and recall the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammed’s grandchildren, Hassan and Hussein, at the tragic battle of Kerbala-Iraq, against Yazid people.
Tabut ceremony originated from the Iraqi Shiite, brought to Bengkulu by workers (from Madras – India) who were constructing the fort Marlborough for the British East India Company. The first Tabut ceremony in Bengkulu was carried out by Sheik Burhanuddin (also known as Imam Senggolo) was from India in 1685. Sheik Burhanuddin married the woman of Bengkulu, after he passed away the Tabut ceremony was then inherited to their children, including amongst others those who assimilated with the indigenous Bengkulu inhabitants. This ceremony has been going on for quite a long time, about 3 centuries. Because of the long period, this ceremony is considered as a traditional ceremony of the Malay tribe of Bengkulu.

Rainforests of Bengkulu province are home to both the world's largest flower Rafflesia Arnoldi and the world's tallest flower, known locally as Kibut or bunga Bangkai (Amorphophalus Titanum). There are 16 species of Rafflesia, Rafflesia Arnoldi is the largest. Its flower attains a diameter of nearly a meter can weight up to 7 kg.
The Rafflesia Arnoldi which is known locally as "bunga Rafflesia" is one of the plants which are protected by law in Indonesia. It is a really rare and a unique plant. It lives as a parasite on the Tetra stigma vine, as its host. Its petals grow to 50 cm long and 2.5 cm thick. The unique of the Rafflesia is it has no observable root or stem, and no leaves. It is a parasitic plant since it has no chlorophyll and haustorium. Nutrients and water are obtained from host cell. This bizarre flower is pollinated by flies attracted by its scent. The buds take many months to develop. It stays in bloom up to 14 days and can be seen during wet season between August - November. This sensitive parasitic plant grows only once a year in primary undisturbed rainforest.
The Rafflesia Arnoldi was discovered by British Lieutenant which was appointed as Governor of Bencoolen (Bengkulu) Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and British botanist Dr. Arnold in the year of their arrival (May 1818), in Lubuk Tapi – South Bengkulu, hence the plant’s botanical name. It is now known as the official symbol of Bengkulu province.
The Rafflesia, the world's largest flower is found in many areas in the forests of Bengkulu province, normally in Taba Penanjung (45 km or 28 miles from Bengkulu city center) on the slopes of the Bukit Barisan Mountains, the most accessible being close to the main road halfway between Bengkulu and Curup. 2.Talang Ulu, Curup, Rejang Lebong.
3.Suban hot spring, Curup, Rejang Lebong.

ALASKA FISHING SEASON
Our fishing season begins in Alaska King Salmon fishing on the Little Susitna River with Bob Bujak and company.- Rochester, New Yorklate April for Alaska Rainbow Trout, followed by Alaska King Salmon fishing which begins in mid-May. Throughout the fishing season, we fish for Alaska King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Chum Salmon and Pink Salmon, as well as Alaska Arctic Char, Grayling and Rainbow Trout. When the Alaska King Salmon fishing season closes on July 13th, the Alaska Silver Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Chum Salmon and Pink Salmon fishing is coming into full swing. The salmon season runs well into September here in South Central Alaska and is followed by trout fishing which is great until freeze-up in early to mid October.
The largest fish we boated last season, was a monster Alaska King Salmon caught on the Talkeetna River weighing in at 68 pounds, 9 ounces which is believed to be the largest King Salmon boated in the Mat-Su Valley in 2005. Unfortunately the proud angler had not signed up for the Mat-Su King Salmon Derby and the prize was taken by a 57 pound King Salmon for a $10,000 cash prize! So don't forget your King Salmon Derby ticket when you fish for the Alaska King Salmon with us in 2008!!
HOW MANY FISH??!
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game set up the weir and started monitoring the Alaska Salmon on the Deshka River in South Central Alaska just north of Anchorage in the heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (Mat-Su Valley) at 11:00 am on May 29, 2007 which is one of the earliest counts for the Alaska sport The day we spent you was highlight our trip Alaska. We can't wait do it again this summer. Shaw & Company- Ogden, Utahfisherman.
They counted a record shattering number of Alaska King Salmon (Chinook Salmon) at 18,714! They also counted Alaska Silver Salmon(Coho Salmon) at 10,574 before pulling the weir from the cold water on September 6th. This Alaska Silver Salmon count shattered all escapement records in the history of the Alaska Matanuska-Susitna Valley’s Deshka River a short drive from Anchorage. The Alaska Pink Salmon (Humpback Salmon) numbered 3,954.
Though no count is taken for Rainbow Trout, the trout fishing on the Deshka River was phenomenal as they spent their autumn days feeding on the eggs of the Pink Salmon, Silver Salmon and King Salmon that had spawned their way up Mat-Su’s infamous Deshka River. Alaska King Salmon Fishing Talkeetna River, AlaskaAlaska Fish and Game also counted Alaska Salmon on the Matanuska-Susitna Valley’s (Mat-Su Valley’s) Little Susitna River from August 4th through September 26th. As always the weir was not in place on the Little Su until after the Alaska King Salmon run, there is no official count. However, there was a very solid run of Alaska King Salmon with many large fish being caught.
An escapement of 17,573 Alaska Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) passed through the weir on the Little Su north of the launch at our Homestead here in Houston, Alaska north of Anchorage. The Chum Salmon (Dog Salmon) run was quite light in 2007 as was the run of Pink Salmon. Although the Alaska Sockeye Salmon run on the Little Susitna River doesn't migrate far enough north to reach the weir and be counted, it was a solid run. Our goal is to share the excitement of Alaska Salmon fishing and Alaska Trout fishing with everyone.
Unfortunately there is no count taken on the Talkeetna River. However, there was a very strong run of Alaska King Salmon and we were able to limit out almost every trip. The Chum Salmon and Pink Salmon came in in large numbers as usual and though not the best eating fish, they are super fun to fight. The Sockeye Salmon run was also generous and we had a large number of clients leaving the river banks with full coolers and sore arms!
2008 ALASKA SALMON FISHING PREDICTIONS
As for the salmon runs in the 2008 fishing season, they're predicting another good year with very strong runs of Alaska King Salmon, Alaska Silver Salmon and Alaska Sockeye Salmon. This should be another great fishing season for the Alaska Salmon Fishing Industry! Keep watch for updates on our Fishing Reports page.

Association football is the prominent sport in Brazil. The National Team has won the FIFA World Cup tournament a record five times, in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 [1] and is the only team to have never missed a World Cup participation, and to be among the favorites to win the trophy every time the competition is scheduled. Pelé, one of the most recognized footballers in history, led Brazil to three of those championships and is the top scorer of all time in the sport. After the third win, Brazil kept the World Cup trophy permanently. All of the contemporary talents in the national team prominent in the football world include Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and most recently Kaká. Some of these players can be considered super-stars, achieving celebrity status internationally and signing sports contracts, as well as advertisement and endorsement contracts, in the value of millions of dollars.
The governing body of football in Brazil is the Brazilian Football Confederation.

History
In the 1870s an expatriate named John Miller worked on the railway construction project in São Paulo together with some 3000 other immigrant families from the British Isles in the last decades of the 19th century. in 1884 Miller sent his ten year old son Charles William Miller to Bannisters school in Southampton, England to be educated. Charles was a skilled athlete who quickly picked up the game of football at the time when the Football Association was still being formed, and as an accomplished winger and striker Charles held school honours that gained him entry into the Southampton Club team and later into the County team of Hampshire.
In 1888, the first sports club was founded in the city, São Paulo Athletic Club.
In 1892 while still in England, Charles was invited to play a game for Corinthians, a team formed of players invited from public schools and universities.
On his return to Brazil Charles brought some football equipment and a rules book with him. He then develop the new rules of the game amongst the community in São Paulo. São Paulo Athletic Club won the first three years championships. Miller's skills were far above his colleagues at this stage. He was given the honour of contributing his name to a move involving a deft flick of the ball with the heel "Chaleiro".
Charles Miller kept a strong bond with English football throughout his life. Teams from Southampton and Corinthians Club traveled to Brazil to played against São Paulo Athletic Club and other teams in São Paulo. After a tour of Corinthians to Brazil in 1910 a new team in Brazil took on the name of Corinthians after a suggestion from Charles
The Brazilian Football Confederation was founded in 1914, and the current format for the Campeonato Brasileiro was established in 1971.
In 1988 São Paulo Athletic Club celebrated its centenary playing the English side Corinthians at Morumbi Stadium. English Corinthian finish its tour by going against the local professional Corinthians Paulista team, who counted the likes of Sócrates and Rivelino amongst its roster, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo and true to Corinthian principles of good clean football the score was 1 to 0 in favour of the locals when as agreed Socrates changed shirts to play alongside the English amateurs. This did not affect the score unfortunately although a largely packed stadium was cheering on for a drawn result.
It was announced on September 29, 2007 that the CBF will launch a women's league and cup competition in October 2007 following pressure from FIFA president Sepp Blatter during the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup in China.[2][3]

Football quickly became a passion for Brazilians, who often refer to Brazil as "o país do futebol" ("the football country"). Over 10,000 Brazilians play professionally at home and all over the world.
Football has a major effect on Brazilian culture. It is the favorite pastime of youngsters playing football on streets. The World Cup draws Brazilians together, with people skipping work to view the national team play, or employers setting up apparatus for employees to watch. The general elections are usually held in the same year as the World Cup, and critics argue that political parties try to take advantage of the nationalistic surge created by football and bring it into politics. Former footballers are often elected to legislative positions.
One unique aspect of football in Brazil is the importance of the Brazilian state championships. For much of the early development of the game in Brazil, the nation's size and the lack of rapid transport made national competitions infeasible, so the competition centered on state tournaments and such inter-state competitions as the Torneio Rio-São Paulo. Even today, despite the existence of a national tournament, the state tournaments continue to be hotly contested and the intrastate rivalries remain intense.
The development of a single state championship did not have the effect intended. Instead of allowing the best teams to compete, it led to the establishment of many new clubs to share in some of the successes. The increase in the number of clubs resulted in a wider spread of talents and decline in the quality of play. Some of the more successful teams did not like the change, including Fluminense who complained that they were forced to travel across the country to play teams they had not heard of.
Brazilian football is a reflection of the country's multiracial society. Brazil's unique style is characterised by much creativity and swing and is infused with various rhythms and choreographies. It is believed that this unique style was developed in the low income areas largely populated by people of African descent. The great "foot ability" that the players had could be traced to the physical coordination and rhythm associated with the capoeira, Brazilian martial arts, and samba which are characterized by footsteps to dance or to play under the rhythm of African drums.
